Think Christmas, as in Bazaar!

SUNDAY, November 18th at the Athens WAR MUSEUM

11 am until 7 pm

The American Women’s Organization of Greece (AWOG) will bring Christmas to Athens a bit early with their annual Christmas Bazaar.   On Sunday, November 18th, from 11 am until 7 pm, the ground floor of the Athens War Museum, located at Rizari 2, will be transformed into a place of magic and wonderment for young and old alike. This event is open to the public; admission is free.

Holiday music will jumpstart your Christmas spirit; let your eyes feast on the many tables filled with handmade ornaments, wreaths, tablecloths and decorations for your home and Christmas tree.  Santa will be on duty, decked out in red and green, ready for a visit from youngsters whose friends and family can take their own photos.  Traditional American Baked Good and tables will draw you in with the delicious sights and smells of Christmas with homemade American style pies as well as brownies, chocolate chip and sugar cookies and candy for stocking stuffing. The Food Court will have traditional tasty American treats including AWOG’s famous Chili, Hot Dogs with homemade relish and more. Thanksgiving decorations and seasonal foods will also be available as well as some great bargains on beauty products and books for your leisure time.  And for those that prefer to play, there will be tombola games for adults and children with many prizes to win.

A  mere 1 Euro donation for the  Grand Lottery could be just the ticket that sends you to Mykonos for a weekend, an overnight stay at a resort hotel or a night out for dinner. And that is only one of the many prizes and fabulous gifts donated by generous sponsors for the raffle. Everyone has a chance to win a hotel stay, jewelry, works of art, dinners for 2 and many more wonderful prizes.  All the proceeds from the lottery are donated to  Greek charities. In 2017 AWOG allocated more than 8,000 Euros to Greek charities and scholarship. Save the date, November 18th, to join in the Christmas fun and fantasy.

This event is open to the public; admission is free.

AWOG Christmas Bazaar 2016

Well, the weather outside was frightful

But the bazaar was so delightful!

Gale force winds, freezing temps and shards of rain

Didn’t stop the Holiday Cheer at the 2016 AWOG Christmas Bazaar.

The festivities got a jovial jumpstart with the official opening by US Ambassador to Greece, Geoffrey Pyatt and our Honorary President, Mary Pyatt. Many thanks to generous sponsors who continue to give to AWOG so that we can give back to the community.  Kudos to our volunteers—both members and friends of AWOG—putting in long hours to make the bazaar a success. And the biggest thank you to the bazaar patrons, shopping to support our charities.  On page 4 are the listings of the winning names and numbers from the Grand Lottery.

Our charities took in 1400 Euros in Sales.  AWOG’s net was approximately 3500 Euros. In all, we totaled almost 5000 Euros. At the Ledra in 2015 we netted 9000 Euros.  So, although the numbers were down, we did well—on a weekday, with the first winter storm and a partial transportation strike. And with the scramble for a venue in mid-summer that Co-Chair Jane Bizos faced, after the Ledra closed, we were fortunate that she was able to secure a venue to put on a bazaar in an easily accessible Athens location. Members worked together as a team in good spirits. The War Museum is a good venue in terms of space and location; the Board has already officially applied to reserve the space for next year on the last Sunday in November. There are also tentative plans to include American staples of food such as Chili, always a big hit, as well as a few other classics to boost sales and satiate patriotic holiday appetites! If you are interested in helping out for next year’s bazaar a meeting will be held in late March. Watch the Bulletin/Face Book/Google Bulletin Board/Area Rep Announcements for the date.  At the January Board meeting the budget for 2017 will be considered with close scrutiny as a percentage of the net from the bazaar will be allocated for our charities and scholarship.

A big round of applause to Co-Chairs Jane Bizos and Bessie Sioutas.
